Pelican Applauds Legislature on Passage of Significant Legal Reform

Today, the Louisiana Legislature passed HB 57 by Speaker Clay Schexnayder, the Civil Justice Reform Act of 2020, in an overwhelming majority. HB 57 is a major victory for curbing lawsuit abuse and lessening the personal financial pain it causes, as well as its damaging effects to our state’s economy

The following is a statement from Daniel Erspamer, chief executive officer of the Pelican Institute for Public Policy (Pelican Institute), regarding the passage of House Bill 57.

“The Pelican Institute congratulates the legislature on its overwhelming passage of critical legal reforms, which will lift the burden lawsuit abuse places on all Louisianans. It’s past time to Get Louisiana Working, and HB 57 will help make our state a place that creates and encourages, rather than chases away, jobs and opportunity for all its citizens.

This is an important step forward, and we thank House Speaker Clay Schexnayder for showing true leadership and rejecting the entrenched special interests that have dominated the process for far too long. We urge Governor Edwards to join the supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature, as well as Louisiana’s taxpayers and working families, in signing this vital legislation into law.”
