Pelican Institute Statement on Legislature’s Decision to Underfund LA GATOR Program
The Pelican Institute for Public Policy expresses deep disappointment over the legislature’s decision to pass a $51 billion budget without adequately funding the LA GATOR K-12 education scholarship program.
“I’m heartbroken for the tens of thousands of families who raised their hands to ask for another option. Because the legislature refused to fund LA GATOR, these children will continue to wait. We will not give up on them, even if the legislature failed them today,” said Daniel Erspamer, CEO of the Pelican Institute. “We extend our gratitude to the Governor’s office, supportive legislators, and our dedicated partners who worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of parents across Louisiana. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we remain committed to continuing this fight together.”
Earlier this year, nearly 40,000 Louisiana families applied for the opportunity to enroll their children in schools or educational programs that better meet their unique needs. Instead of answering this call, lawmakers allocated only $43.5 million to LA GATOR, barely enough to support students already participating in existing scholarship programs.
While turning away thousands of children from life-changing opportunities, lawmakers chose to spend on other pet projects and favored legislative initiatives to local governments and non-governmental organizations. This lack of focus on priorities sends a troubling message about the state’s commitment to providing better opportunities for its citizens.
Educational choice is not just a question of fairness for families but also of fiscal responsibility. The LA GATOR program would save taxpayers money while expanding access to quality education, creating a win-win for Louisiana.
The Pelican Institute remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for Louisiana families and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. We urge lawmakers and the Governor to prioritize the needs of children and provide solutions that empower families in our state’s comeback.
