NEW POLL: Louisiana Voters Call for Fiscal Restraint, Bold Tax Reforms, and Expanded School Choice as Costs Rise; Thanksgiving Traditions Add Flavor to Findings
As families across Louisiana prepare to gather for Thanksgiving, the Pelican Institute for Public Policy today released its latest Pelican Pulse poll, revealing strong voter demand for a leaner state government, deeper tax relief, and greater education options. The statewide survey shows clear support for solutions to curb spending, tackle lawsuit abuse, and empower families—while also capturing some holiday cheer with insights into Thanksgiving favorites.
“Louisiana voters are sending a powerful message: it’s time to rein in government growth, deliver real tax relief, and put families in the driver’s seat for education,” said Pelican CEO Daniel Erspamer. “With rising costs hitting pocketbooks hard, these results underscore the opportunity for lawmakers to build a more prosperous Louisiana by embracing policies that promote freedom, efficiency, and opportunity for all.”
The poll highlights widespread frustration with government overreach and a desire for reforms. Key findings include:
- Fiscal Discipline Tops Priorities: Nearly 7 in 10 voters (68%) agree state government collects and spends too much money, while 69% see it riddled with waste, fraud, and inefficiency. Only 25% of Louisianans oppose a constitutional Government Growth Limit, signaling a conversation and solution for long-term spending controls.
- Tax Relief Gains Momentum: A majority 52% supports last year’s comprehensive tax reform that cut income taxes, closed loopholes, and simplified the code. 1 out of every 2 voters back eliminating the state personal income tax entirely to let families and businesses keep more of their earnings.
- Education Freedom Resonates: 61% agree lawmakers should fully fund the LA GATOR Scholarship Program to give every child access to the best education fit. Additionally, 64% support abolishing zip code-based school assignments, allowing families to choose public schools that work for their kids.
- Lawsuit Abuse and Energy Costs: 66% agree lawsuit abuse drives up costs for families, and 53% support reforms to limit lawsuits against energy producers for a more predictable legal environment and lower consumer bills.
- Union Rights and Accountability: 61% agree government and teachers union members should be able to resign anytime to avoid funding unwanted political speech, reflecting a push for individual freedom.
- Rising Costs Demand Action: Over 62% report higher utility bills in the last year, with 56% facing increased financial stress from them. A striking 79% attribute higher utility prices at least partly to state government or Public Service Commission policies. Auto insurance premiums rose for 58% of voters.
- 2026 U.S. Senate Race:Â Among Republican voters, incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy leads early preferences with 29%, followed by John Fleming at 22%, while 24% are split among the other candidates and 22% remain undecided.
“Voters are energized about putting students and families first—no more one-size-fits-all mandates,” said Erin Bendily, Pelican’s Senior Vice President. “The strong backing for school choice and full GATOR funding shows Louisiana is ready to lead in education innovation, giving every child the tools to succeed.”
In a nod to the holiday spirit, the poll added a dash of fun by asking about Thanksgiving traditions. Roasting reigns supreme as the top turkey cooking method (39%), followed by deep-frying (17%). For sides, stuffing or dressing takes the crown (37%), with sweet potatoes or yams (20%) and macaroni and cheese (13%) close behind.
